When Mikel Merino is expected to set off for his medical at Arsenal

Arsenal have got their Premier League campaign off to a winning start and will hope for similar joy on the transfer front this month.

With just over a week until the summer transfer window closes, the Gunners will likely be looking to add the finishing touches to their squad.

Arsenal have made one senior summer signing so far, bringing Riccardo Calafiori to the Emirates Stadium from Bologna.

Now, according to a report in the Spanish media, the Gunners have apparently reached agreement over another player – and it’s one that Arsenal fans have been waiting for.

Arsenal and Real Sociedad reach Mikel Merino agreement

Arsenal have been on the right track with regards to talks over Real Sociedad midfielder Mikel Merino, despite a recent hitch.

The Basque club apparently rejected Arsenal’s offer of €30million (£25.6million) plus add-ons earlier this week.

However, talks have since been going very well indeed, and now, according to , it’s a done deal.

The deal was finalised on Thursday in London, with Sociedad chairman Jokin Aperribay in charge of operations, claimed the report.

After an initial approach on Wednesday, Arsenal have now raised their bid to a fixed €32.5million, with €5million in add-ons (£27.5million plus £4.3million).

Merino, who was absent from his club’s last two training sessions, will be flying to London in the next few hours for his medical, added the report.

The Spain international looks set to arrive at Arsenal overnight, so it shouldn’t be long before everything is wrapped up.

In addition, Fabrizio Romano has now given his stamp of approval with the all-important “here we go”.

Exciting hours ahead for Arsenal fans

And so, it looks like this transfer saga is nearing the end, with Arsenal set for a positive conclusion.

Everyone in the football world is aware just how “spectacular” and “world-class” Merino is, having helped Spain to Euro 2024 glory.

The 28-year-old also has silverware with Sociedad and with Borussia Dortmund, so clearly he knows what it takes to win trophies.

In terms of his style of play, recently published an article describing Merino as the ‘type of midfielder Arteta would create in a lab if given the chance.’

All in all, it looks like the next few hours will be exciting for Arsenal fans, who will be eagerly monitoring the decisive steps ahead of the all-important official announcement, if all continues to go well.
