Southampton reportedly interested in Cahill but Hasenhuttl needs younger blood

Southampton are among a number of clubs chasing the services of Gary Cahill,

They that his former club Aston Villa, as well as their Championship play-off final opponents Derby County – of course managed by his old Chelsea and England team-mate Frank Lampard, are also keen.

The says that Cahill is currently on £75,000 a week at Chelsea and although there is an understanding that the former Blues captain will have to take a pay cut, he hopes that the fact he’s available on a free after walking away from Stamford Bridge will enable a deal that is both lucrative for him and affordable for potential suitors can be cut.

And while the prospect of adding the experience of a seasoned international and someone who won the Champions League in 2012 may appeal to the Saints, they need younger blood.

The whole point of Hasenhuttl’s arrival was to bring Southampton back closer towards that model club status they had when they were first promoted back to the Premier League; focusing on younger blood, which would shine for the club before making money when they’re sold.

Cahill is a short-term solution who is already very much on the decline; Gareth Southgate and Maurizio Sarri’s unceremonious axing of his services amounts to that.

The Saints need to be looking more long-term under Hasenhuttl and they should leave Villa, Derby and whoever else to battle over an aging force.
