Southampton register interest in free Ryan Gauld transfer with midfielder open to St Mary’s move
According to the , Southampton have registered their interest in signing Ryan Gauld on a free summer transfer after the sought-after midfielder was released by Farense.
The Liga NOS outfit have elected against offering Gauld a new contract to extend his time at the Estadio de Sao Luis into a third season, with his current terms set to expire next month.
Gauld has offers to pursue a career across Europe, America or Asia after putting together an impressive campaign in Portugal despite his side’s final day relegation, with nine goals and seven assists in .
Southampton have already been in touch with Gauld’s representatives to sound out the 25-year-old’s situation and to express their interest in his services as the midfielder begins to assess all offers.
Polish side Legia Warsaw, several Major League Soccer franchises and clubs in Asia have tabled offers to the attacking midfielder, who also has interest from teams in Spain, France and Portugal.
Southampton CEO Martin Semmens could hold an advantage, however, as Gauld is open to a move to St Mary’s, as it would see him reunite with former Dundee United teammate Stuart Armstrong.
Gauld left Scottish football for life in Portugal after Sporting Lisbon agreed to pay for his services in 2014, and is still awaiting his after representing his country at Under 17, 19 and 21 levels.
TBR’s view:
Gauld could represent an interesting option for Southampton to target in the summer given he will be a free agent from the end of next month, and put together a very impressive season despite Farense’s relegation from the Liga NOS.
The Aberdeen-born maestro played an instrumental role in Farense’s fight for survival going down to the final day of the season, with Gauld’s goal involvements having a direct role in four wins and four draws.
He also found the back of the net against Benfica and Braga while captaining Farense on several occasions – including away to Sporting Lisbon – and may now offer Ralph Hasenhuttl a creative leader due to the presence of 29-year-old Armstrong.
