Southampton loanee tipped to score ‘up to 30 goals a season’, club urged to buy him from Saints

Southampton loanee Mohamed Elyounoussi has enjoyed a fairly successful stint at Celtic this season, registering 17 goals and eight assists in all competitions.

The 26-year-old joined Saints in the summer of 2018 for a reported £16.2million fee, but he made just 19 appearances for the Premier League club and failed to score whilst at St Mary’s.

Southampton subsequently loaned Elyounoussi out to Celtic the following season, and returned to Parkhead in the summer of 2020.

The Norway international has made 65 competitive appearances for the Hoops, registering 24 goals and 14 assists, and won the Scottish Premiership and Scottish Cup in 2019-20.

This season, however, they’ve been a shadow of their former selves, trailing champions Rangers by 23 points and failing to win either of the domestic cups.

Vidar Riseth, formerly of Celtic and Norway, believes his former club should make the Southampton man’s signing a priority.

“It’s important to keep him,” he told the . “Of course he’s a good player but it’s also important that he is a good man.

“He has scored almost 20 goals this season in a team which hasn’t done so well and he’s not started all of the games. If he had been playing regularly that number would be increased.

“You can see the potential he has within him to do that. If he was going to be in the attacking side of the side every single week he could get up to 30 goals a season and that’s excellent.

“I think they will keep him and I hope they do. Celtic has to build a team again.

“There are some going to be sold and some going to sign and come into the building as new. They have to do something and I feel that keeping Mohamed is one of the most important.”

Elyounoussi may have struggled in his early days at Southampton, but two seasons down the line, he’s improved significantly and boasts a good goal and assist record.

He’s contracted to Saints until 2023, so their hand is strong in negotiations, but given how much he’s developed, surely he’ll be in Ralph Hasenhuttl’s plans during the pre-season?
