How Son Heung-min’s Tottenham teammates reacted when he told them he is going to leave Spurs

Tottenham Hotspur forward Son Heung-min has announced that he will be leaving Spurs after 10 years at the club.

Son made his decision public at a press conference on Saturday ahead of Tottenham’s pre-season friendly against Newcastle in South Korea on Sunday.

The 33-year-old has enjoyed a fruitful decade at Tottenham, registering 173 goals and 101 assists from 454 appearances and captaining the club.

Son, speaking to the press, shared how his teammates reacted when he told them of his decision to leave Spurs.

Son Heung-min’s Tottenham teammates ‘happy but disappointed’ over exit decision

When asked about how his Tottenham teammates reacted, Son Heung-min said they were disappointed with the prospect of him leaving, but also happy for him.

The South Korea captain also admitted he had only spoken with a few of his teammates, naming Ben Davies as one who he has often discussed his future with.

“I spoke with only a few guys, ones I’ve spent a long time with,” Son said, as transcribed by .

“Obviously they’re disappointed, as a friendship or as a team-mate you’d be very disappointed if someone decided to leave, but in a respectful way.

“Obviously I’m very close with Ben so we’ve spoken about the future a lot of times. Obviously he fully respects my decision. So does everyone.

“What can I say? It’s very, very hard to tell my teammates because I sometimes probably spend more time with them than my family because we’re travelling together, spending time together every single day at the training ground, five or six hours every day.

“I think we know each other so well. Everybody was disappointed but also in a way very happy for me.

“That was my feeling but I don’t know what they were actually feeling! They seemed happy but disappointed when I told them my decision.”

Where Son Heung-min could go this summer

Son wants to move to Major League Soccer despite renewed interest from Saudi Arabia, according to Sky Sports News.

The MLS and Los Angeles FC, who have been strongly linked with Son, will reportedly accelerate talks with Spurs over the forward’s transfer.

Son is set to leave Tottenham with one year remaining on his contract, meaning there’s a good chance Spurs will get a decent fee for the player.
