‘Something to prove’: Mark Lawrenson predicts Manchester United vs Arsenal result; expects three goals
Mark Lawrenson that he expects Manchester United to build on their weekend display and beat Arsenal when they meet at Old Trafford on Thursday.
The Gunners go into the game off the back of an impressive showing against Newcastle at the Emirates. They won 2-0 with two second-half goals.
It was an important response from Mikel Arteta’s men. They went into the clash having suffered a heavy loss against Liverpool that brought an abrupt end to their run of 10 games without defeat in all competitions.
United meanwhile, took a point away from Stamford Bridge on Sunday. And they have received a boost ahead of the game with Ralf Rangnick being confirmed as the club’s new boss until the end of the campaign.
And Lawrenson has claimed that he expects those factors to help the home side edge the clash with the Gunners this week.
“United still don’t look right at the back but a point at Stamford Bridge was a step in the right direction and, if Aaron Wan-Bissaka hadn’t had a rush of blood, they might have taken away all three,” , as he predicted a 2-1 home win.
“Surely they will build on that improvement and, whether Ralf Rangnick is in the Old Trafford dugout or watching from the stands, I am sure we will see more of the same against Arsenal.
“The Gunners got back to winning ways against Newcastle, and created loads of chances in that game, but United playing at home in front of their new manager will have something to prove.”
Arteta knows what Arsenal are capable of at Old Trafford
Arsenal have actually not lost at Old Trafford in the Premier League since 2018. And they produced one of their best performances of last season at the ground last year.
On that occasion, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored a second-half penalty to settle the contest.
Much about Arsenal’s team has changed since then. Hector Bellerin and Willian started and have since left. Meanwhile, Bernd Leno, Rob Holding and Mohamed Elneny all look unlikely to start or even feature.
But it does appear that the Gunners have improved considerably since then. So perhaps it should come as little surprise if their recent run of decent results at Manchester United continues.
