Some Southampton fans react as club celebrates Premier League achievement

Some Southampton supporters have been reacting on social media after the south coast side celebrated setting a new Premier League achievement.

The Saints’ 1-1 draw with Leicester City last Friday saw the St. Mary’s natives become the first top-flight side to avoid defeat after being shown a red card within the first 10 minutes of play since March 2019 ().

Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side were reduced to 10-men early into the Foxes’ visit to Southampton, after referee Robert Jones deemed Jannik Vestergaard to have prevented Jamie Vardy from running in on goal.

Vestergaard had won the ball with his initial lunging challenge but caught Vardy’s ankle on the follow-through, leaving his side forced to play much of the game at a disadvantage.

An independent regulatory commission at the Football Association has since rescinded the one-match ban (), meaning Vestergaard will be available to feature when Southampton visit Liverpool on Saturday.

Leicester, coincidently, were the last side to achieve the feat of avoiding defeat with 10-men for at least 80 minutes, after beating Burnley 2-1 following a fourth-minute sending off for Harry Maguire () in 2019.

Southampton also received a second-minute sending off at home to Manchester United in February when Alexandre Jankewitz was after collecting Scott McTominay, proceeding to a 9-0 rout.

The Saints lost 9-0 to Leicester in October 2019 when reduced to 10-men early on, as well, although Ryan Bertrand’s sending off for a was issued in the 12th minute.
