Some Liverpool fans say Leeds have a ‘brilliant’ player in their ranks, a real ‘quality baller’
A number of Liverpool fans have been praising Leeds United striker Patrick Bamford for speaking up against the European Super League following last night’s Premier League game between the Reds and the Whites.
The football world has been rocked by news that 12 European teams, including six in the Premier League, have agreed to establish a new midweek competition governed by its “founding clubs”.
The proposal involves the clubs forming their own competition to rival the UEFA Champions League, and it has been widely criticised by many pundits, clubs and fans.
In Monday night’s Premier League meeting with Liverpool at Elland Road, Leeds made their feelings clear on the proposal in a number of ways.
Inside the stadium, Whites players wore T-shirts saying ‘earn it’ underneath the Champions League logo and ‘football is for the fans’, and a banner behind one goal had the same message.
And speaking after the 1-1 draw, Bamford made his feelings clear about the controversial proposal.
“We’ve just seen what pretty much everyone else has seen on Twitter,” Bamford is quoted by talkSPORT as .
“It’s amazing the amount of uproar that comes in to the game when somebody’s pockets are being hurt.
“It’s a shame it’s not like that when all the things that go wrong with things at the minute, racism and stuff like that.
“It’s something we talk about but once you’re on the pitch you’re not thinking about stuff that goes on outside the ground.
“We’re like fans really, we can’t believe it and we’re talking about it [amongst ourselves].
“We don’t know what’s going to happen and we’re in shock.
“I think that for me personally from what I’ve seen on Twitter and the news, I haven’t see one football fan who is happy about the decision.
“I think football ultimately is for the fans. Without the fans every single club would be pretty much nothing.”
Bamford’s comments have been welcomed by many fans, including a number of Liverpool supporters, who spoke highly of what their Monday night opponent said:
