Some Liverpool fans have sympathy for departed winger Markovic

It was a relatively quiet day for Liverpool on transfer deadline day.

The Reds didn’t bring in anyone new, despite being linked with the likes of Adrien Rabiot and Sandro Tonali, and will now seek to keep their momentum going with the players they have.

There were a few outgoings though, including U23 captain Matty Virtue who joined Blackpool, Liam Miller who went to Kilmarnock on loan and Pedro Chirivella who has pitched up at Spanish outfit Extremadura UD.

Another player who left the club was Lazar Markovic ().

Fulham signed the winger on a free transfer at the 11th hour on Thursday, bringing an end to his disastrous four-and-a-half year spell at Anfield.

A £20 million hit

Markovic leaving for nothing means that Liverpool took a £20 million hit on the player, after he was signed for that sum by former boss Brendan Rodgers in the summer 2014 from Benfica.

He only ever made 34 appearances for the club and scored three goals.

His Anfield stint included being sent out on loan four times to Fenerbahce, Sporting CP, Hull City and Anderlecht.

It simply didn’t work out for the Serbia international, who arrived with a promising reputation as a 20-year-old.

Fan reaction

Although the majority of Liverpool supporters won’t be too sad to see the back of Markovic, some did have sympathy for the player and believe he had a hard time of things because of Rodgers’ management.
