Some Leeds United fans react as former talent Alex Mowatt hits another screamer

About five years ago, if you were to pick the Leeds United youngster who would be playing in the Premier League and England team it is unlikely many would have gone with Kalvin Phillips.

Lewis Cook, who has made his England bow but is currently playing Championship football with Bournemouth, might have been your first choice. Then there was Sam Byram, or maybe Charlie Taylor.

Or even Alex Mowatt.

The gifted midfielder was the club’s player of the year after a stellar 2014-15 season which saw him score nine goals in 38 appearances.

However, whichever way you look at it, Leeds botched it with Mowatt. Once linked with a £7 million move to the then-Premier League side Hull City in 2015, Mowatt eventually left with his contract dwindling for a fraction of the price.

Garry Monk completely failed to get the best out of the player, who joined Barnsley for a pitiful £500,000 (

Now, still only 25-years-old, Mowatt is back to showcasing just what he is capable with the Tykes.

He is in fine form for the Championship side, scoring a trademark long-range strike this weekend following a similar strike v Millwall earlier this month.

Mowatt is now captaining his side and is a player Leeds clearly let slip through the cracks. With better management, perhaps from Marcelo Bielsa, there’s little doubt that this driving midfielder could have been a force to be reckoned with at Elland Road.

Indeed, plenty of Leeds United fans are enjoying his current run of form and hoping for the best from this Thorp Arch graduate.

And you never know? He is out of contract next summer. Maybe an Elland Road return could be in the offing…?
