Some Everton fans hail ‘immense’ midfielder after 3-1 Southampton win
Everton kicked off their Premier League season with a home win against Southampton on Saturday afternoon – and some Toffees fans on Twitter were raving about the performance of Abdoulaye Doucoure.
Rafael Benitez’s reign in charge at Everton has begun with a 3-1 victory at Goodison Park, but they didn’t do it the easy way.
Visitors Southampton went ahead in the first half when Adam Armstrong scored on his Saints debut. However, the Merseyside club roared back in the second period to flip the game on its head.
Richarlison, Doucoure and Dominic Calvert-Lewin all netted in the second-half to give the hosts three points.
Everton now turn their attention to next week’s trip to Elland Road where they face a Leeds United side that were beaten 5-1 by Manchester United today.

Benitez can get the best out of Doucoure at Everton
Doucoure’s goal today was a thunderous strike that he hit from just inside the Southampton box and it won’t be a surprise if he scores a few more this season.
The 28-year-old has spoken this week about a more attacking role under Benitez. Therefore, watching him in a box-to-box central midfield position is an exciting prospect.
He proved at former club Watford he’s a real goal threat when he goes forward, so it looks like Benitez wants to tap into that.
It will be great for the Toffees if they don’t have to solely rely on Calvert-Lewin each game.
