‘So nice’: Matt Doherty impressed by Tottenham player’s dribbling at the World Cup yesterday

Tottenham defender Matt Doherty has praised the performance of his club teammate Rodrigo Bentancur at the World Cup.

Bentancur flew into the game against Portugal last night, making some early challenges and getting booked within minutes of kick-off.

But he walked that disciplinary tightrope expertly and went on to have a huge influence on the game, starring for his side.

They ended up losing 2-0, but with the score at 0-0, Bentancur produced a sublime run to get through on goal but his effort was saved.

Doherty on Bentancur

Doherty told : “Portugal against Uruguay, Rodrigo almost scored such a good goal, it would have been so nice.

“I thought he might go around the goalkeeper but he decided to shoot, got saved. I felt they deserved a draw, to be honest.

“The penalty at the end, I know people questioned that but he had to give it as Bruno was through on goal.

“I know people think it’s harsh, but he would have had a tap in. Uruguay and Korea both on a point, so they’ll probably have to win their last games.”

Bentancur has been on great form for Spurs going into the tournament and he continued that on the world stage last night.

He outshone Real Madrid’s Federico Valverde, who is growing to be regarded as one of the world’s best midfielders and has won the Champions League.

Bentancur did not deserve to be on the losing side but it was a largely flat team performance from Uruguay, who have a job on to make the knockout rounds now.
