‘So much potential’: Alasdair Gold names the Spurs player everyone at the club has high hopes for
Tottenham Hotspur winger Steven Bergwijn has been praised by Alasdair Gold, who said “everyone in the club has high hopes” for the 23-year-old.
Bergwijn joined Spurs in January last year from PSV Eindhoven for a £27million fee on a contract until the summer of 2025.
The Dutchman’s debut came in February against Manchester City and it couldn’t have gone any better as he opened the scoring for his new side with a stunning volley en route to a 2-0 win.
Bergwijn can be happy with his efforts in his first year at Tottenham, with plenty of minutes, some great performances and a manager who rates him very highly.
After missing out against Fulham due to injury, he returned against Sheffield United and played a part in Spurs’ first and third goals, the team looking much better with him in it.
“So an assist for Bergwijn, which will be brilliant for his confidence,” Gold said on his channel.
“There was one moment as well when Hugo Lloris booted a long kick out of his goal, Bergwijn took it so beautifully on the turn and he got wiped out on the Sheffield United box.
“He absolutely adds more thrust to Tottenham’s attack and he lets Son and Kane do what they do, I will back him to the hilt, the goals will come, Mourinho said that repeatedly and everyone in the club has high hopes for Bergwijn.
“He was bought for a reason, they’d been tracking him for a while and he had incredible potential, what is he 22, 23? He has so much potential.”

Bergwijn has done really well at Spurs over the past 12 months, showing his class on both wings, and given his age and potential, there’s still a lot more to come from the Netherlands international.
He has claimed five assists to date this season and, though he’s yet to score in 2020-21, improvement in front of goal will surely come with time, at which point he’ll surely cement his place in the Spurs XI.
