Wood has been a key player for the Clarets, having finished as their in three seasons.

The New Zealand international has netted at least 10 goals in each of his four top-flight seasons with them.

A player with experience in Premier League relegation battles, Wood is perfect for Newcastle at this moment in time.

In addition, his departure weakens Burnley, who are just one place above the Magpies in the bottom three.

Nelsen, Wood’s former All Whites teammate, has praised Newcastle for getting themselves such a good player.

“He’s evolved into a very, very good player,” Nelsen told .

“Early on in his career, probably consistency was his big weakness, which he’s absolutely destroyed.

“He’s destroyed that in the Championship by scoring 20 plus goals consistently.

“And he’s moved to Burnley now, he’s scoring 10 plus goals in the Premier League. That is gold dust, that’s so hard to find.

“You can risk it by looking at some talented young foreign players and all that, but the Premier League is a different animal.

“And what’s even harder is when you’re in this relegation zone.

“It’s extremely difficult and to have a player who’s had experience and who has scored goals there… I think it’s a very, very good move for Newcastle.”
