‘So crucial’: Rangers urged to give £12k-a-week ace new contract, he’s ‘Champions League’ quality
Glasgow Rangers boss Steven Gerrard should look to sign Ibrox veteran Steven Davis a new contract, Jimmy Nicholl has told .
The boyhood Bear initially joined Rangers on loan in January 2008 before signing permanently from Fulham that summer.
Davis’ first spell at Ibrox was incredibly fruitful as he lifted three Premiership titles, two Scottish Cups, three Scottish League Cups and reached the UEFA Cup final.
A spell at Southampton followed, and in 2019, with Rangers back in the Scottish Premiership, the 36-year-old rejoined the Ibrox side – again, first on loan, before signing permanently.
This season, Davis has made 27 appearances in all competitions for Steven Gerrard’s side, who are in pole position for their 55th Scottish title and also in the Europa League last 32.
On Sunday, the Northern Ireland icon is poised to make his 300th appearance for Rangers in their trip to Motherwell.
And although Davis’ £ contract expires at the end of the season, Nicholl believes his qualities and longevity should prompt Gerrard to extend his deal.
“Steven is so fit, he hardly gets injured,” the Northern Ireland assistant and former Gers defender told .
“I can’t see any reason why he can’t play for another three or four seasons, I really don’t.
“The most important thing about playing Champions League football is keeping the ball and that is one of Steven’s biggest strengths.
“He will go and receive the ball under pressure, whether a game is going well or not, and play a simple pass just to keep the team ticking over.
“Those kinds of players are just so crucial at Champions League level.
“It would be really difficult for Rangers to find another player with the same ability to operate in those type of games as Steven Davis.
“I’ve watched him do it for Northern Ireland against some of the best teams in the world. I’ve got no doubt he has plenty left in the tank to keep doing it with Rangers.”

There can’t really be much added to what Davis’ peers have said about him – he is a superb player and professional, and Rangers are lucky to have him.
It wouldn’t be surprising to see him play for a few more years, much like Jermain Defoe – and hopefully he’ll be able to help Rangers to more silverware this season and beyond.
