Eddie Howe is only expected to make two more signings at Newcastle before the end of August

After solving their PRS issues at the end of June, many Newcastle United supporters expected the club to go on the transfer offensive.

Eddie Howe’s project has big ambitions and it was believed that Paul Mitchell could spend around £100m at Newcastle in what remained of his first window at the club.

Despite the reluctant sales of Elliot Anderson of Yankuba Minteh – two excellent young talents, there was reason to still be positive about the club’s salvage mission.

However, since then, and amid talk of Howe becoming the new England manager, very little progress has been made.

Newcastle’s only new outfield arrival has been Lloyd Kelly, who signed for the club without a transfer fee having left Bournemouth after the expiration of his contract.

There’s definitely adequate reason for fans on Tyneside to be frustrated, even if the club do still have time to make amends for their messy PSR fire-sale.

That being said, Sky Sports journalist has perhaps just shared news that won’t make any feelings of disappointment feel much better.

Downie was replying to a fan of the club on X, who asked if Newcastle were actually chasing any signings right now.

Keith Downie says Newcastle don’t have much money to sepnd unless they sell

In his response, Downie said the ‘constant message’ he was hearing was that Howe’s side don’t have much spending power for the rest of the summer.

The journalist said that Newcastle were only likely to sign a new centre-back and a right-winger, a disappointing revelation even if they are two problem positions.

Downie shared: “I can see you signing two players. A RW & a CB.

“The constant message is there isn’t a huge amount of money to spend. Obviously that would change if you made a sizable sale.”

Of course, Newcastle United fans certainly won’t be hoping that the club sanction any big departures, given both Bruno Guimaraes and Anthony Gordon are the duo most often linked away.

Fortunately, neither seems likely to leave right now, but it’s all shaping up to be something of a disappointing summer for Newcastle, who seemed to have an opportunity to really build.

That being said, Newcastle are thought to be in pole position to make one attacking addition next month.
