Sky pundit says Tottenham have an 18-year-old who’s ‘gonna be a superstar’

Tottenham Hotspur defender Ashley Phillips has hit the ground running in his loan spell away from Spurs.

Earlier this week, the Tottenham summer signing joined Plymouth Argyle until the end of the season.

Phillips made his debut for the Championship side on Saturday, playing the full 90 minutes in the 1-1 draw at Huddersfield.

The 18-year-old Spurs defender was outstanding on his Pilgrims debut, clocking up some impressive stats.

As per , Phillips made six clearances, two interceptions and one block.

He also won two ground duels and one aerial duel, made 24 accurate passes, and wasn’t dribbled past at all.

Sky Sports pundit Alan McInally, speaking on Soccer Saturday, was eager to tell Paul Merson just what a top talent Phillips is.

“Merse, remember about 20 years ago we spoke about a young full-back called Mr Trippier, I’ve got another one for us,” he said, as transcribed by .

“Ashley Phillips, 18 years old, on loan from Spurs, centre-back, boy’s gonna be a superstar!”

Tottenham Hotspur defender Ashley Phillips a star in the making

Phillips, an England Under-21 defender, joined Spurs from Blackburn Rovers in the summer for a reported fee.

Ange Postecoglou was reportedly ready to hand the teenager his debut in November, but sadly an injury he picked up on international duty put paid to that.

Now, with Radu Dragusin having arrived at Tottenham, Phillips has been sent out on loan to get regular first-team football.

So far so good from the Spurs talent, and to get such huge praise from an esteemed pundit like McInally speaks volumes about his quality.

You could argue that Postecoglou should’ve kept him at Tottenham this season, but maybe it would’ve been too much too soon.

Now, Phillips gets the chance to play regularly, develop his skills further, and next season he could well be ready to feature regularly for Spurs.
