Sky pundit left amazed by £20m Tottenham target after first-half of Everton win

Tottenham Hotspur target Ben Godfrey was lauded after a moment of brilliance during the first-half for Everton in their win over Burnley on Saturday.

Ben Godfrey came in for only his second Premier League appearance of the season, with Jarrad Branthwaite suspended for the trip to Turf Moor.

Tottenham are reportedly interested in Godfrey and ready to make a move. So Spurs may have had one eye on the 25-year-old’s performance against the Clarets. And they would have been hugely impressed by one moment just before the break.

Tottenham target Ben Godfrey praised during Everton clash

Vitinho looked set to leave Zeki Amdouni with the simple task of tapping the ball into an empty net from the edge of the six-yard box. But somehow, Godfrey got across and cleared the ball for a corner.

Certainly, speaking on (broadcast on 16/12; 18:18) Andy Hinchcliffe was amazed by the intervention from the defender.

“Well, initially, it’s so poor from Tarkowski,” he said. “He’s caught watching the ball. Vitinho makes his run, don’t worry about the ball, stay with the run. And he doesn’t. It should be 2-1. Godfrey’s recovery is absolutely outstanding.”

Reminder of defender’s quality

The interception may have also stuck out to Tottenham fans because of the brilliant work from Ben Davies in their recent win over Newcastle.

On that occasion, the Welshman did amazingly well as it would have been easy to turn the ball into his own net with Alexander Isak lurking behind him. Somehow however, he did enough to confuse Isak and the ball went behind for a goal kick.

Godfrey’s clearance was just as good. He could have also easily scored an own goal on another day. But he managed to turn it behind for a corner.

Obviously, Tottenham are not going to base any decision on whether they make a move for Godfrey in January on one interception.

But the -rated defender deserves enormous credit after what has been a frustrating campaign. He has been overshadowed by Jarrad Branthwaite.

But he provided a little reminder of his quality to keep Everton 2-0 up going into the break.
