Sky journalist says two CL clubs now ‘out of race’ for £22m Spurs defensive target

Tottenham Hotspur have been linked with Trevoh Chalobah in recent months.

reported in October that Spurs remained in the mix for the Chelsea defender ahead of the January transfer window.

Tottenham seemingly did try to land Chalobah in the latter stages of the summer transfer window, but left things too late.

Now, Spurs may have just received a small boost in the shape of a report suggesting two big suitors have dropped out of the race.

According to Sky Germany journalist Florian Plettenberg, Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund are both no longer eyeing Chalobah.

This could well clear the path for Tottenham to swoop for the defender, especially as Chelsea seem keen to offload him.

Admittedly, Chalobah is currently out with a muscle tear and, according to Plettenberg, he will not be match fit until the end of January.

“FC Bayern and Borussia Dortmund are both out of the race for Trevoh Chalobah,” he wrote on . “Both clubs are not planning his transfer in winter.

“After another muscle bundle tear, the 24 y/o will only be match-fit again at the end of January.”

Tottenham could certainly do with bolstering their defensive ranks further in the New Year.

Although Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero are a world-class duo, there isn’t much strength in depth beyond them.

Spurs had to line up with back-up players in three of the four defensive positions against Wolves and the drop-off in quality was noticeable as Ange Postecoglou’s charges lost.

Chalobah would be a good shout for Tottenham. The ace is talented, young, and has extensive Premier League and Champions League experience.

He’s also really fast and also versatile, which would be key when the Africa Cup of Nations gets under way and Pape Matar Sarr and Yves Bissouma are set to leave for the tournament.
