Skrtel has experience but Rangers should target fresher blood to boost defence

Rangers are still pursuing a deal for Fenerbahce defender Martin Skrtel this month,

Gers boss Steven Gerrard played alongside Skrtel during their time together at Liverpool and the Slovakian’s former captain has attempted to convince him to come to Ibrox.

Skrtel has a contract offer on the table from the Turkish club, but that has not deterred Gerrard from trying to get the defender to join his Rangers revolution.

But Gerrard already has one vastly experienced international defender – Gareth McAuley – at the club, to offer experience and guidance for the younger players.

A club looking to get to where Rangers want to go shouldn’t be reliant on two ageing former Premier League stalwarts in their backline, and a lack of pace back there would be an issue as well.

Many of the qualities Skrtel has are already possessed by McAuley and Gerrard should be looking at younger, more mobile options to boost his title bid.

Gerrard has already added stellar quality to his midfield and attack in the shape of Steven Davis and Jermain Defoe, and similar quality at the back would be a major boost; but a more dynamic option than Skrtel would be ideal.
