Six top managers PIF can target once Newcastle takeover goes through
Newcastle United fans’ dream could soon come true as it looks like Mike Ashley will finally be able to sell the club and walk away for good.
revealed last night that the takeover is close and could even be completed by the end of today. That is a huge boost for the club and the supporters, who have gone through a lot under Ashley over the years.
Every Newcastle fan will be delighted with the news, but Steve Bruce, a Magpies fan as well, may not be too thrilled as many believe he’ll face the sack once the new owners come in.
If that happens, Newcastle will have to bring in a top manager to help take the club back to where it belongs. Here are six options they should consider…
Antonio Conte:
The most obvious suggestion, Conte is a proven, world-class manager. He won a league title with Inter Milan only a few months ago and he’s waiting on the wings looking for a new challenge.
Conte left Inter because of disagreements with the board’s transfer plans. If PIF come in and offer to back the Italian with whatever he needs, he could well agree to step in and replace Steve Bruce once the takeover goes through.
Steven Gerrard:
One of the greatest players to ever grace the sport, Gerrard’s managerial skills have been pretty good too. The former Liverpool midfielder helped the Gers dethrone Celtic last season and it’s only a matter of time before he comes back to England.
Liverpool fans would love to see Gerrard return to Anfield and succeed there. However, with Jurgen Klopp going nowhere, it wouldn’t be a bad idea for Newcastle to give him a chance once the takeover is complete.
Erik ten Hag:
Ten Hag would be an incredible option for Newcastle United. He has a proven track record of developing young players into superstars at Ajax, and he could well do the same at St James’ Park.
The Dutchman’s philosophy is a fantastic one too. His attacking style of play will surely entertain Newcastle fans, who have had to go through Bruce’s ultra-defensive system since his arrival at the club.
Graham Potter:
Potter is arguably the most exciting manager in the country at the moment. The Brighton boss has made the Seagulls an incredible team to watch over the last two years, and although his side haven’t reached the heights they should, numbers suggest he’s doing a brilliant job.
Brighton earned 20 points less than what their expected points stat suggests. If they had just converted their chances, they would’ve finished fifth, which would’ve been a phenomenal achievement. ()
Newcastle could really do with a manager like him for a long-term project, but it won’t be easy to lure him away from the Amex.
Lucien Favre:
The 63-year-old has been without a job since leaving Borussia Dortmund last December, but he is definitely one Newcastle should look at.
Favre, despite an underwhelming end to his stay at Dortmund, averaged over two points every game there. That is a phenomenal record, and his flexible philosophy could really help Newcastle reach new heights.
Ralf Rangnick:
One of the finest minds in world football, Rangnick is an idol to some of the best managers in Europe. The likes of Julian Nagelsmann and Thomas Tuchel have reached the heights they have thanks to the 63-year-old.
Rangnick is currently the head of sports and development at Lokomotiv Moscow. He is under contract there, but if Newcastle’s new owners can somehow lure him back into management, their chances of success will increase considerably.
