Simon Mignolet reportedly faces Liverpool axe which could give forgotten man Loris Karius one last chance at Anfield

Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolet is likely to leave this summer as he is considered too expensive to be a back-up option, .

Brazilian stopper Alisson Becker is the undisputed number one at Anfield and Mignolet has only placed twice all season.

The Belgium international featured in the EFL Cup against Chelsea and the FA Cup against Wolves with both games ending in 2-1 defeats.

After six seasons and more than 200 games, it looks like the 31-year-old’s time at Liverpool is up. But the signs were already there when Mignolet was dropped last season for Loris Karius.

And Mignolet’s summer exit could open the door for Karius to return to Liverpool and get one last chance.

The German keeper was loaned out to Besiktas for two years after an accumulation of error-riddled performances. The most notable one was in the Champions League final.

Karius played 33 times for Liverpool last season but the club gave him a vote of no confidence when they spent big-money on Alisson.

Since moving to Turkey, the 25-year-old has had mixed success. He has conceded 39 goals in 28 matches and has been far from perfect.

But Karius is still relatively young for a goalkeeper and will be thinking about his long-term future.

If Mignolet leaves, Karius could cut his two-year loan stint short and return to Anfield, even though he would be Alisson’s back-up.

This could be the former Mainz goalkeeper’s last chance to prove he can compete for the Liverpool goalkeeper spot.
