Simon Jordan says Tottenham should’ve signed £40m star instead of Dominic Solanke

Since Tottenham Hotspur signed Dominic Solanke, there has been a lot of debate over whether he is the right man for Spurs.

The North Londoners have needed a new striker since Harry Kane left the club to join Bayern Munich in the summer of 2023.

Ange Postecoglou bravely decided against signing a replacement for the 2023/24 season, but it was clear to everyone that the issue would be addressed by Tottenham in this window.

Solanke has come in, and everybody has an opinion on this transfer.

Simon Jordan says Tottenham should’ve signed Ivan Toney instead of Dominic Solanke

Tottenham were linked with a number of strikers in this summer’s transfer window.

Solanke proved to be the chosen one in the end and Tottenham agreed to sign him in a deal worth up to an eye-watering £65 million.

That is a lot of money, which is why many people like Graeme Souness are calling Tottenham’s move to sign Solanke a big gamble.

Simon Jordan doesn’t seem to be a huge fan of this transfer either.

The former Crystal Palace owner believes Tottenham would’ve been better off signing Ivan Toney this summer over Solanke.

Jordan thinks the Brentford star would do a much better job at Spurs than their new big-money signing.

He said on : “I am surprised that Spurs have spent that kind of money.

“I mean, he scored a lot of goals in the Championship, pretty much like the guy at Fulham, Mitrovic, who couldn’t score goals in the Premier League and eventually found his feet and scored goals.

“I like him as a player. I think he’s a very gifted player. I would have liked to see Spurs go for Ivan Toney because I think he would have done a better job than Solanke, but maybe there’s economics around that deal.”

What was Tottenham’s stance on Toney before signing Solanke

Toney was definitely on Tottenham’s shortlist this summer.

The Englishman has entered the final year of his contract at Brentford, and he has been keen to move to a bigger club for quite some time now.

Reports have claimed that Tottenham considered paying £40 million for Toney, who they viewed as a cheaper alternative to Solanke this summer.

However, Postecoglou decided to go with Solanke instead, and it remains to be seen whether that’s the right decision.

Solanke is expected to make his Tottenham debut when Spurs take on Leicester City on the opening day of the new Premier League season.
