Signing Samuel Umtiti would be bad news for left-footed Liverpool man – TBR View

Liverpool are reportedly want Barcelona defender Samuel Umtiti this summer as they look for a defender this summer having struggled for options at centre-back, with Barcelona keen to sell – but surely, that would be bad news for Ben Davies.

Umtiti, 27, has endured a difficult season at Barcelona. The World Cup winner was out for much of the first half of the season through injury and having returned, finds himself behind the likes of Gerard Pique, Clement Lenglet and Oscar Mingueza.

Spanish newspaper that Barcelona are likely to cash in on Umtiti this summer, a player that joined Barcelona from Lyon in the summer of 2016 for a fee of £21.5million (). Liverpool are keen.

Umtiti was linked with a move to Anfield in the January window but a move never materialised. Instead, Liverpool signed Ozan Kabak and Davies, the latter who is yet to make his senior debut for the club. Umtiti chose to remain at the Nou Camp.

Davies, 25, joined Liverpool in the January window from Preston North End in what was a somewhat surprising signing. The left-footed centre-back is yet to even make his debut for the Reds, remaining some way down the pecking order at Anfield.

That is, despite being the only left-footed centre-back at Liverpool. Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez, Joel Matip, Nat Phillips and Kabak are all right-footed – only Davies is left-footed. This summer presents an interesting window for Davies.

Does he decide to leave? Or stick it out? Time will tell. But as he struggles for game time, another left-footed centre-back would end his chances of making a name for himself at Liverpool. So, signing Umtiti surely ends Davies’ brief Liverpool stint.
