Should these Manchester United or Liverpool stars replace Raheem Sterling against Wales?

England were left to rue missed chances on Saturday night when Vasili Berezutski headed in a last minute equaliser. This only served to stoke the fires between some of the English and Russian fans on the streets of Marseille, resulting in horrific scenes over the past few days.

One man that will be hugely disappointed with his performance is Raheem Sterling, who wasted countless opportunities on the night after working his way into great positions. The 20-year-old could now have blown his chance at being a spear-head for the Three Lions’ attack after failing to find his feet since his £50 million move from Liverpool last summer and Roy Hodgson could look to someone else to replace the Manchester City man out wide.

Over the next couple of pages, the best options to replace Raheem Sterling against Wales have been detailed. We would love to hear your thoughts on the situation, so feel free to leave your comments below.

Jamie Vardy

The popular choice amongst England fans to replace Sterling would be Leicester City striker Jamie Vardy. The 29-year old enjoyed the season of his career, scoring 23 goals on the way to securing the Premier League title.

Vardy picked up a knock before England’s opener with Russia which may be why he did not feature in the starting XI. However, with Roy Hodgson favouring a 4-3-3 formation, the England boss may feel that Sterling was more suited to this system, even if Vardy had been fit.

Nevertheless, there is no question that Vardy’s electrifying pace and ruthless edge in front of goal – two of the main reasons for Arsenal’s desire to sign the former Fleetwood man – would have been a welcome addition to the team, as Sterling failed to provide any decent end product after getting himself into plenty of good positions.

Vardy’s goal record for The Three Lions is also better, having scored three in eight matches whereas Sterling has only managed to find the net twice in 24 appearances. Playing Vardy will also allow Hodgson to go two up front when England are chasing a game or trying to stretch a stubborn defence, much like the Russians on Saturday night, although admittedly, Kane and Vardy have little minutes playing together.
