Should Newcastle be happy with getting Mata if it means losing Longstaff?

Newcastle are ready to battle for Manchester United midfielder Juan Mata this summer,

They that the man United signed for a reported £37.1m () back in 2014 is able to leave on a free transfer this summer and that has attracted the attention of Rafa Benitez.

Elsewhere, that United are set to bid for Sean Longstaff, who has played just eight Premier League matches for the Magpies.

That means that the clubs’ midfield transfer business could well be intertwined this summer – with it perhaps being mutually beneficial for them to have a good working relationship.

But would losing Longstaff and signing Mata in the same window represent a good window for the Magpies? It’s tempting to think that they need to develop their young talent.

On the other hand, Mata is a special talent and given the way Miguel Almiron lifted the mood around the club, the arrival of another elite creative talent could be similarly transformative.

Of course, Newcastle could sign Mata and keep Longstaff – United’s autonomy over the Spaniard is diminished by his contract situation – which would be an ideal scenario.

But if only one of Mata and Longstaff were to be in a black and white shirt by the time the new season kicks off, who would the fans rather it be?
