Should Leeds regret failing to rival Cardiff for £6m giant?

Middlesbrough giant Aden Flint is reportedly closing in on a move to Neil Warnock’s Cardiff City this summer as the Bluebirds look to return to the Premier League at the first attempt – and Leeds should be looking on with envy.

that Cardiff are closing in on the signing of 30-year-old Flint this summer, for an initial fee of £4million rising to £6million in add-ons. It comes after just one season at the Riverside.

Flint, who is renowned for being a goalscoring defender having clocked up 47 career goals in 367 matches, was linked with a move to Leeds back in the summer of 2017, while he was still captain of Bristol City.

An experienced centre-back in the Championship, Flint boasts leadership, and the aerial ability that is unmatched in the second tier of English football. Leeds need a player like Flint.

That is because the club surprisingly sold Pontus Jansson to Brentford for just £5.5million, leaving an enormous gap at the heart of the Leeds defence – which is yet to be replaced.

Yes, the Whites have brought in Ben White on a season-long loan from Brighton and he has impressed in pre-season friendlies against Guiseley and Tadcaster Albion. But he is hardly seen as the long-term replacement for Jansson.

Leeds need a big name at centre-back and for a similar price in which the Whites sold Jansson to Brentford, Flint would have been perfect. But it seems the 6ft 6in defender is being signed by a former Leeds manager in Warnock.
