‘Should be in the squad’: Some Rangers fans want Steven Gerrard to promote ‘elite-level’ 18-year-old

A number of Glasgow Rangers fans have taken to social media to urge Steven Gerrard to consider picking Nathan Patterson for Wednesday’s league game at Ibrox and beyond.

The 18-year-old Rangers academy right-back enjoyed a bright start to the decade, beginning with his exploits during the winter break training camp in Dubai.

Patterson put in an impressive display for the Ibrox side in the mid-season friendly against Lokomotiv Tashkent, and followed that up with a superb showing against Stranraer in the Scottish Cup fourth round.

Since then, Patterson has featured in Rangers’ matchday squads in the Scottish Premiership games against St Mirren and Ross County.

At reserve level, he has captained Rangers against the likes of Atletico Madrid in the UEFA Youth League and Inverness Caledonian Thistle in the Challenge Cup ().

Back in November, reported Graeme Murty as saying: “I think he’s really accelerated since the start of the season.

“He’s really pleasing to work with and he’s got all the characteristics you would ascribe to an elite-level full-back.”

With Rangers captain and right-back James Tavernier having come in for some criticism lately amid a downturn in form for the Ibrox side, some Bears thought Gerrard should give the likes of Patterson a try in the first team.
