Should Arsenal sell Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez now or risk losing them on a free next summer?
There is much uncertainty surrounding Arsenal football club as the summer transfer window approaches, with the future of some of their key players up in the air, while fans also do not know what to expect, in terms of arrivals, without Champions League football on offer.
The most notable uncertainty surrounds the Gunners’ attacking duo Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez, who are both entering the final year of their respective contracts, and contract renewals are looking no closer.
Will the club decide to keep these two men in the hope that they will sign a new deal, while risking the chance of them leaving on a free, or will both Sanchez and Ozil be playing for new clubs next season?
Between them, Sanchez and Ozil directly contributed to 51 of Arsenal’s 77 goals, with the former scoring 24 of these. This is a remarkable feat and their absence would severely damage the Gunners.
The London club, because of the pair’s influence, will want to keep both Ozil and Sanchez, but with only a year left on their respective contracts, seeing them leave for free could be even more painful.
If Arsenal were to sell, they would undoubtedly receive a large fee for both, especially Sanchez, who has been phenomenal for Arsenal, the last two seasons especially.
There is an argument to be made that the club should look to sell the pair as well.
The finance earned could be reinvested back into the team in order to bring more quality to other areas of their squad, in order to fill some gaps that were highlighted last season. Of course, questions must be asked of how appealing Arsenal currently are as a destination for a player, especially without Champions League.
On the other hand, they could opt to keep Ozil and Sanchez and make a real push for top four next season, before attempting to tie down at least one of the players to a long-term deal towards the end of the campaign.
It is a real dilemma for fans and those people in and around the club, and even more so for the players, who at the peak of their careers must make the difficult decision in either leaving to play Champions League football or to stay and fight for a club that has historically played in Europe’s biggest competition.
