Sheyi Ojo comments on how Ryan Kent can help him become a Liverpool first-teamer
Sheyi Ojo has been discussing his hopes of one day breaking into the Liverpool first-team, and how Steven Gerrard plans to help him get there.
Rangers snapped up the talented winger on loan from Anfield this summer. Gerrard’s links at his former club helped get a deal over the line for a player who has stuttered in his career so far despite immense talent.
Since the Ibrox switch, Ojo has been a big success at Ibrox and Rangers fans are undoubtedly already hoping they might be able to keep him going forward.
However, he spoke about an early conversation he had with Gerrard about breaking into his parent club’s first-team. Ojo mentioned that he needs to start doing enough to surpass current Liverpool stars Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah first.
“That’s one of the main messages the gaffer and I spoke about when I first came here. For me to get into that Liverpool team I need to be doing what they (Mane and Salah) are doing—if not better.”
He went on to suggest that the arrival of Ryan Kent from Liverpool will help him reach that point.
Kent, who spent last season on loan at Ibrox, joined permanently in a reported £7 million move and Ojo feels working with his former Liverpool colleague will only make him better.
“Whenever I’m playing I need to be as direct as I can and hopefully influence the game as much as I can. You can only do that with great players around you and Ryan Kent coming in can only help.
“In this sort of team, the midfielders look to get players like Ryan and me on the ball. As long as we’re making the right movements and we’re on the same wavelength, hopefully we’ll score more goals.
“That’s the aim. I’ve played with him since I was 16 and know him well. He can only help the team and hopefully he can help me score goals.”
Rangers fans will, of course, want to keep Ojo long-term after his impressive start to life at Ibrox.
However, if he and Kent can develop a Mane-Salah like impact in attack for Rangers this season not many will mind if it just for one season.
Hopefully, the pair can help Rangers close in on Old Firm rivals Celtic.
