Sherwood picks two English defenders that will keep Newcastle in the Premier League
that Newcastle United will have a much better chance of staying in England’s top flight – if they sign one of two English defenders.
Eddie Howe is expected to be busy welcoming in a few new signings in the January window. It represents the first opportunity that the club’s new owners will have to spend, and improve the club’s playing staff.
The Toon’s main priority is likely to be improving their options centre-back. Burnley and England defender James Tarkowski is out of contract at the end of the season, and has been linked with a January move.
The Telegraph claims that Tarkowski is one of the club’s main targets. Sherwood believes Newcastle need a player like the ex-Brentford man, or, like Brighton skipper Lewis Dunk in the coming weeks.
“He is doing the right thing because he won’t be staying in the league without the connection of the fans, and the players. He’s getting that at the moment, because he is getting them on the front foot,”
“His only chance is if he gets better personnel in January – maybe a Tarkowski, someone of his ilk, someone who knows the Premier League – Lewis Dunk, that type of player.”

Tarkowski has been sensational for Burnley alongside captain Ben Mee. Just four games shy of clocking up 200 for the Clarets, Tarkowski could be about to move on – with his contract about to end.
At the end of the season, Newcastle might get him. But Burnley would hardly sell to a rival in the middle of a relegation dog fight. Brighton, meanwhile, are not expected to be in the fight to avoid the drop.
But 30-year-old Dunk has a £45,000-a-week () contract at Brighton until 2025, playing more than 350 games for the Seagulls. There is no way he is leaving the Seagulls in January, to join Newcastle.
