Sheffield Wednesday fans not surprised at Swansea City demise

Swansea City suffered what could be a very costly defeat in the Premier League last night. Manolo Gabbiadini’s solitary strike saw Southampton leave the Liberty Stadium 1-0 victors, leaving Mark Hughes’ side looking likely to survive in the Premier League.

For Swansea, relegation to the Championship now looms. Huddersfield Town need just one point from their final two games in order to survive. That would send the Swans back to the second-tier.

It would certainly come as something of a surprise considering that Carlos Carvalhal seemed to have turned things around in South Wales.

But one set of fans not shocked by the demise of Swansea are those at Carvalhal’s former club Sheffield Wednesday.

The Portuguese did work some wonders at Hillsborough. He led the Owls to two consecutive play-off qualifications but by the time he left the club in December last year his stock had fallen in South Yorkshire.

Fans of Sheffield Wednesday became tired of Carvalhal’s press conference antics, style of play and lack of faith in the young players at Hillsborough. There was also a belief that when big games came around, the Portuguese found himself out of his depth. He would build expectation, before falling short at the big hurdle.

So for Sheffield Wednesday fans, it has been no surprise to see him struggle to pick up a crucial win in the recent big games.

After initially impressing at Swansea, Carvalhal has failed to pick up a win for Swansea in their last nine games and that looks like it could see him back in the Championship next season – if he retains his job at Swansea.

For Sheffield Wednesday fans it is typical Carvalhal and they are not surprised to see the struggles Swansea are now facing.
