Shay Given names the two ‘old-school’ Arsenal players who he’d have loved as teammates
Arsenal enjoyed their third successive North London Derby win at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday.
The Gunners managed to secure another famous victory over their old rivals without star midfielders Martin Odegaard and Declan Rice, with Gabriel Magalhaes the match-winner for Mikel Arteta’s resilient side.
With Manchester City up next for Arsenal, the north London giants have a real chance to make a statement with a win on the weekend at the Etihad Stadium, a ground the Gunners have not won at in the league in over a decade.
And Shay Given has now praised two Arsenal players who the Premier League legend says he would have loved to play with.

Gabriel Magalhaes and William Saliba hailed after Arsenal win vs Tottenham
Speaking on , the former Republic of Ireland international was full of praise for Gabriel and William Saliba after Arsenal’s performance against Tottenham, where the duo were once again imperious at the back.
Gabriel and Saliba have formed arguably the best centre-back partnership in the Premier League in the last three seasons, and Given has now said he would have loved to have had the duo ahead of him during his playing days.
Given said when asked about how good Gabriel and Saliba have been for Arsenal: “They are a bit old school as well, which I like. They like to head, they like to clear, they like to put their bodies on the line.
“And sometimes a modern centre-half is like: ‘Can he play from the back? Can he find a nice pass?’ But these two strike me, as an ex-goalkeeper, as players I would love to play behind, because they throw their bodies, they head it, they kick it. Sometimes it is not pretty, but I like that.”

Gabriel and Saliba will lead Arsenal to the Premier League title
Arsenal have been transformed in the last three seasons by the immense work laid out by Arteta and executed by the likes of Edu Gaspar, and Gabriel and Saliba have been key to the Gunners’ incredible rise on the pitch.
The central defenders have been two of the best in Europe since forming together back in 2022, with Gabriel and Saliba only getting better and better with each passing game for Arsenal.
And if the Gunners are to go for the Premier League, the two centre-backs will be key on this journey, with Gabriel and Saliba amongst the most important players in Arsenal’s squad for this season.
