Shaun Goater sends European Super League message to Manchester City on Twitter

Manchester City legend Shaun Goater has sent a message to the club on Twitter on the subject of the European Super League.

The Citizens are one of 12 European clubs – of which six are in the Premier League – that have signed up to the breakaway league.

The ESL said the founding clubs had agreed to establish a “new midweek competition” with teams continuing to “compete in their respective national leagues”.

Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester United and Tottenham complete the English six-club contingent.

In terms of continental European clubs, the six Premier League clubs are set to be joined by AC Milan, Atletico Madrid, Barcelona, Inter Milan, Juventus and Real Madrid.

The proposals have been met with widespread controversy, with many fans, pundits, officials and players across English football voicing their opposition.

And Goater claims the “power and strength of the players along with fans” could prove a game-changer in terms of whether the competition will go ahead.

He warned the club that they should not “be surprised” by the backlash and says he’s “intrigued” as to whether the players’ voiced will be heard or ignored.

Unlike the Champions League, which requires teams to qualify, the ESL would include the same 15 teams every year, with the remaining five qualifying annually.
