Shaka Hislop has admitted that he has been proved completely wrong about Declan Rice after Arsenal smashed their club record to sign the midfielder in the summer.

Hislop was speaking to as he suggested that the midfielder is incredible to watch after his late winner gave the Gunners a dramatic victory over Luton on Tuesday.

Declan Rice has already now scored three massive goals in the context of Arsenal’s season. The 24-year-old put Mikel Arteta’s side back in front in stoppage-time against Manchester United.

Certainly, few are now still discussing whether Arsenal were right to spend so much on Rice. He appears to be a signing who has elevated the side to another level.

And one of those who is happy to admit that he got it wrong is Shaka Hislop, with the former West Ham goalkeeper admitting he really thought that the Irons were getting the better end of the deal.

“When West Ham were selling Declan Rice in the summer and the price started to go north of £65 million, I thought West Ham were getting an absolute bargain here,” he told . “I did not think that Declan Rice was worth that kind of money, the £105 million or whatever he went for.

“Declan Rice is worth every single penny. And as much as we’ll talk about this late header, whenever Arsenal have struggled, at both ends of the park, defensively or offensively, Declan Rice has somehow been the person that they’ve been able to call on. It really is incredible to watch this man play the game. He’s such a talent.”

Midfielder continues to keep stepping up

Rice has stepped up at every stage of his career whenever a hurdle is put in front of him. He quickly became a key part of West Ham’s side, moving forward to be a holding midfielder for the club.

He earned a similar role with England and is now one of the first names on the team sheet for his country.

And now Arsenal are finding out how the star can elevate his game to thrive in a game challenging for the Premier League title.

It is remarkable that he has been able to make the difference on so many occasions already. Martin Odegaard produced a captain’s assist late on. But Rice is undoubtedly proving to be a leader with the way he is constantly making a crucial impact.
