Sevilla centre-back Diego Carlos has fallen down Newcastle’s wish-list

It’s looking increasingly likely that Newcastle United will not be reigniting their interest in Sevilla centre-back Diego Carlos in the summer transfer window.

The Brazilian who turned 29 earlier this month was the subject of heavy interest from the Magpies during the January transfer window and a offer was lodged.

But La Liga giants Sevilla dug their heels in and were only willing to let one of their prized assets leave if Newcastle paid what they felt was above Carlos’ valuation.

It did look the six-time Brazilian international was heading to Tyneside at one stage, but the chopping and changing in Sevilla’s stance and asking price resulted in PIF walking away.

Given that Carlos is the wrong age of 20, it looks like Eddie Howe’s side may be looking at younger centre-halves who have a longer shelf life.

Daily Mail reporter Craig Hope responded to a fan on Twitter who had asked about where Newcastle’s interest in Carlos lay.

He said: “I’d say Diego Carlos is looking less likely given age and fee, it felt like one for January only.”

A report from states that Sven Botman and Lloyd Kelly, who are 22 and 23 are players that remain part of discussions at St James’ Park.

When touching on the Botman and Kelly interest, the report states: “Both players fit the profile Newcastle are expected to move for as they aim to reduce the average age of their centre-backs and then blend together experience and promise.

“For that reason, Sevilla’s Diego Carlos is thought to have moved down the list of targets.”

While Diego Carlos, a Europa League winner, is in the prime years of his career, it seems that Newcastle have moved on and are now looking with a long-term focus in mind as the club have pulled nine points clear of the relegation zone.
