Sessegnon names Pochettino as main reason he joined Tottenham

Ryan Sessegnon that Mauricio Pochettino was the main reason he signed for Tottenham Hotspur – admitting that it was difficult for him when the Argentinian left so soon after his arrival.

Spurs appeared to pull off a real coup in 2019 when they landed the youngster. He had burst onto the scene as a 16-year-old at Fulham. And Tottenham ultimately paid to bring him to North London.

He arrived in the summer immediately after Pochettino guided Tottenham to the Champions League final. There was also a move for Tanguy Ndombele. And some may have expected that Spurs may be about to put themselves back in Premier League title contention.

Unfortunately, Pochettino’s tenure would not last much longer. He was sacked in November 2019. And, as ESPN notes, Sessegnon only played twice for the Argentinian.

He had been injured following his move and missed the first few months of the campaign. And he suggested that not having the chance to work properly with Pochettino was a real blow.

“When I was a bit younger, I was aware that Spurs wanted me to sign previous to when I did, but when I eventually did, he was the main reason why,” . “Obviously I knew his track record with young players at the club.

“I looked at that and thought it was a good opportunity for me to come and play a lot of games at a young age under him. When he went, it was difficult because he was the main reason why I signed and when I was coming back to full fitness, a new manager had come in.”

Ryan Sessegnon in better place at Tottenham now that Antonio Conte is in place as he reflects on Pochettino departure

Unfortunately, Sessegnon’s frustration during the latter stages of Pochettino’s tenure proved to be a sign of what was to come for the Englishman.

For various reasons, his time at Spurs had not been working out. Thankfully however, the arrival of Antonio Conte appears to have made a big difference.

Obviously, the wing-backs are key figures in Conte’s system. And with that, Sessegnon has finally been able to prove himself once again.

If he can have some luck with injuries in the years to come, Sessegnon could be a huge player for Tottenham in the future.
