Serge Aurier’s improvement going under the radar at Tottenham

Understandably, many who have watched Tottenham Hotspur this season are marvelling over the form that Jose Mourinho has unlocked in the likes of Eric Dier, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Tanguy Ndombele and Harry Kane.

In truth, only listing four members of the Spurs squad seems incredibly unfair. Several more have been outstanding and have more than played their part in guiding Tottenham to the top of the table.

There is a long way to go. But Spurs now appear to have a squad that looks to have the ability to battle on several fronts.

Of course, that unfortunately means that some in-form players will play less football than they would like.

But if they are playing well, they still have a crucial role to play as they push for the spots of the players sat ahead of them in the pecking order.

And that is arguably why someone like Serge Aurier arguably deserves a lot more credit than he may be getting.

Admittedly, plenty of Tottenham fans lauded his performance at the weekend. But elsewhere, he is arguably being overlooked.

, no player made more successful challenges or won more aerial duels than Aurier in the win over Manchester City. Meanwhile, he also managed four clearances.

It was a reminder of how good Aurier – who cost £23 million (via ) – can be. In fact, only two players in the Premier League average more successful challenges per game than the 27-year-old this season (via ).

Some may be wary of putting too much faith in Aurier. In the past, his form has dipped and some of his poorer performances have really cost Spurs.

But with Aurier now tasked with trying to wrestle Matt Doherty’s spot as first-choice off the Irishman, it appears that Tottenham are tending to see the best of him when he does get a chance in the Premier League.
