Serge Aurier is making life difficult for Matt Doherty at Tottenham but it’s ideal for Mourinho
Tottenham defender, Serge Aurier, put in another fine performance yesterday at Chelsea and is proving to be a real thorn in the side of new signing, Matt Doherty.
Aurier, a £23m signing () from PSG back in 2017, has cut a divisive figure during his time in north London. Moments of ill-discipline, coupled with inconsistent performances, led many to believe the Ivorian might be on his way in the summer.

In fact, when the signing of Doherty was confirmed in the summer, it looked to be the final nail in the coffin for the 27-year-old.
But since the signing of Doherty from Wolves, Aurier seems to be another in the Spurs squad who is enjoying a fine turnaround of fortunes under Jose Mourinho. Much like Tanguy Ndombele, the Ivory Coast star seems to be one of Mourinho’s trusted soldiers now.
Doherty, meanwhile, is struggling to dislodge Aurier at the moment after Covid-19 got involved in his season and he now faces a battle to get back into the XI.
Competition
In fairness to Doherty, he did start the season as the number one choice and has put in some good displays. However, he missed the 6-1 win at Old Trafford – a game in which Aurier excelled – and has missed the last two games (both clean sheets).
But Doherty has played in big wins. In fact, he’s only been on the losing side once, on the opening day of the season against Everton, while he didn’t feature in the 3-3 collapse against West Ham.

For Tottenham, this is a brilliant headache for Mourinho to have. He has two right-backs who seem to know their role and can both come in and do similar jobs.
Aurier, though, seems to be the man for the moment as things stand. And while this might be a pain in the backside for Doherty at the moment, it will be exactly what Mourinho wants and the sort of depth that helps teams to silverware.
