Serge Aurier handed real opportunity after news on Spurs teammate
Tottenham Hotspur have been dealt a real blow ahead of their clash with Manchester City this weekend following an announcement concerning Matt Doherty.
, Doherty has tested positive for coronavirus. The news means that the right-back will have to isolate until next Wednesday.
That rules Doherty out of Saturday’s game with City. But, , he is also set to be a doubt for the Europa League tie with Ludogorets as he is only allowed to come out of isolation the day before the game.
Losing the 28-year-old will frustrate Jose Mourinho. But Spurs are now in a better position to cope with these sorts of setbacks.
It looks more than likely that Serge Aurier will get the chance to come in. The Ivory Coast international has only made two Premier League appearances this season, while he has played once in the Europa League.
And there is every chance that his – potential – return to the side could be a brief one. It is entirely possible that Mourinho could bring Doherty back at the earliest opportunity.
But Aurier needs to view his teammate’s misfortune as an opportunity.
On his day, the 27-year-old – who earns £70,000-a-week, – is capable of colossal displays. That is arguably one of the reasons why he can prove such a frustrating figure for supporters.
If he can find one of those performances against City, he can potentially secure himself a run in the side.
It may still only be a matter of time before Doherty regains his place. But Tottenham may really benefit if Aurier sets himself the challenge of delaying his return to the starting lineup for as long as possible.
