Seattle Sounders 2 Colorado Rapids 0 30 October The Settle Sounders booked their place in the Western Conference Semi Final against the Portland Timbers after this victory in the Knockout Round encounter. The home side started strongly and twice tested the Rapids keeper Clint Irwin early on, The first came in the 3rd minute when Adam Moffat hit a low drive from the left side of the penalty area that forced Irwin into a one-handed save. 9 minutes later and Lamar Neagle nearly caught Irwin off his line with a looping header that the goalie manage to regain his positioning and just tip it wide. The home side created another opportunity 1 minute later Moffat again found himself with the ball inside the penalty area, this time on the right side, his shot from about eight yards out beat Irwin, but Nate Sturgis was able to clear it off the line. The rebound fell to Neagle about six yards out, but the forward was unable to control the bouncing ball and the chanceও went. The opening goal finally came for Seattle after 28 minutes. Eddie Johnson found Leo Gonzalez on an overlapping run down the left flank and after the Costa Rican had whipped in a cross that had struck the head of a Rapids defender it fell to Evans, who chested it down before dispatching it inside the far post. After neither side could get total control the momentum seem to switch to the visitors late on as the Sounders goal-Keeper Michael Gspurning ventured out of his box to deal with a long ball and handled with 5 minutes showing on the clock. Referee Silviu Petrescu produced a straight red-Card and almost immediately the Rapids capitalised but from a corner Hendry Thomas headed wide. 3 minutes in stoppage time the homes sides nerves were calmed. Johnson took a pass from Clint Dempsey inside the penalty area, beat a defender and then fired a left-footed shot inside the near post to seal the win. The two legged tie against the Timbers has being slated for this saturday in Seattle and on November 7 in Portland.
