Scotland boss admits he ‘considered’ Celtic talent Mikey Johnston for senior call-up
Scotland national team boss Steve Clarke has admitted he considered calling up Celtic attacker Mikey Johnston for upcoming games with Russia and San Marino.
Clarke made some eye-catching additions to the Scotland squad for their next set of fixtures. John Fleck may finally make his international debut after an impressive start to life in the Premier League with Sheffield United. Dundee United’s free-scoring Lawrence Shankland is also included after a stunning start to life in the Scottish Championship with his new side.

But it seems the Celtic talent was also under consideration.
Clarke,, was responding to a question regarding a potential call up for Chelsea’s talented teenager Billy Gilmour. It was then he mentioned Johnston’s missed opportunity.
“There’s a lot of good boys down there (in the under-21s).
“I considered Mikey Johnston as well who has been in terrific form for Celtic.”
TBR’s View
There is no doubt that Johnston is a future Scotland international. The 20-year-old has been in fine form for Celtic recently, with three goals and four assists so far this season.
However, for now it might be best that he continues to thrive in Scott Gemmill’s under-21 team. He has been included in the most recent squad for upcoming clashes with Lithuania and the Czech Republic and will be hoping to add to his current international tally.
If he keeps up his form with Celtic and remains a first-team regular, Clarke may have to take his consideration of Johnston a little more seriously.
