Schalke Sporting Directior lays out intention to sign Kolasinac from Arsenal
Schalke sporting director Peter Knabel has signalled his interest in signing on-loan Arsenal defender Sead Kolasinac permanently despite the Bundesliga side’s relegation to the second division.
Speaking to club members , Knabel laid out his intention to keep the Gunners defender, as well as striker Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, at the club beyond this season. The Schalke figurehead said: “When I look at the two of them (Huntelaar and Kolasinac) and how they live for the club, it’s the perfect visual instruction for them to stay, it’s very important for us.”
Kolasinac, who signed from Schalke when he arrived at Arsenal in the summer of 2017, returned to the Bundesliga side on loan this winter in an attempt to boost their chances of survival in the German top-flight. However, the Bosnia international, as well as Shkodran Mustafi who also joined the club on a free transfer, was unable to stop the Ruhr-based club from being relegated.
The left-back is likely to be one of many Arsenal players to leave the club for good this summer, with the 27-year-old defender as one of the players Mikel Arteta is likely to allow to depart the Emirates Stadium as the Spanish manager attempts to bring in new signings ahead of the 2021/22 season.

Kolasinac joined the Gunners for a free transfer in 2017 from Schalke, one of the few Bosman signings Arsenal have made in recent years, and this means that, unlike previous transfers, the north London side are under no pressure from supporters to allow the defender to leave for nothing.
Arsenal have been criticised in recent years for their lack of recouping transfer funds, with the like of Mesut Ozil, Alexis Sanchez and the aforementioned Mustafi all leaving for nothing despite arriving with hefty transfer fees. Yet in Kolasinac’s case, fans will be fine with the club letting the defender walk for nothing given that the Gunners didn’t pay a transfer fee for the fullback.
