Schalke figure makes bizarre comment on ex-Arsenal defender Shkodran Mustafi

Schalke head coach Dimitros Grammozis has bizarrely told that former Arsenal player Shkodran Mustafi has been rock-solid despite his recent struggles.

The Bundesliga outfit are bottom of the table and face the very real prospect dropping into the second tier this season.

Mustafi checked in at the club from Arsenal during the January transfer window, with the Gunners terminating his contract.

The centre-back has played five times for his new club and is yet to be on the winning side.

It would seem as though his boss has been impressed, however, suggesting he has been playing well despite his performance last week.

“He is one of the players who is very important to us in the team because he embodies what we demand. It’s important to have players like that on the team.

“He has been rock-solid. he’s defended fantastically and gave the team a lot of defensive power. Against Wolfsburg, he wasn’t quite as good but he is a very important player.”

Although Mustafi has helped Schalke to two clean sheets, the team has shipped 13 goals in three other outings he has made for the team.

The basement boys face the daunting prospect of a game against Borussia Monchengladbach this weekend.

The Gunners have some sound defensive players now and the time was right to part with the World Cup-winning enforcer.

Mustafi had fallen way down the pecking order under Mikel Arteta and his ruthless streak was evident with the defender.

The 28-year-old played 151 times for the North London-based club but struggled for consistency.

It won’t surprise supporters to hear that things perhaps aren’t going according to plan at Schalke with the club in real limbo.

Whilst Arsenal look forward to a Europa League last-eight clash, Mustafi faces the prospect of playing in Germany’s second-tier during 2021/22.
