‘Scapegoat’… Barry Ferguson believes the Celtic fans’ criticism of 23-year-old player is way over the top
Barry Ferguson seems to be having a go at the Celtic fans because of their criticism of Alexandro Bernabei.
The Argentine was signed for £3.75m by Ange Postecoglou and up until recently had done nothing of note to prove that he had the ability to play for the club.
However, the recent injury to Greg Taylor has forced Brendan Rodgers to turn to Bernabei and, to be fair to the 23-year-old, he has done relatively well.
A mistake against Aberdeen caused Celtic to drop two points but decent performances against Hibs and St Mirren have shown that maybe, just maybe, there could be a player in there after all.
However, that hasn’t stopped Ferguson from claiming that Bernabei is the scapegoat of the Celtic fans and that he is being targetted by the Hoops support.
Ferguson said [], “I think he’s come in for a fair bit of criticism. Watching the game last week at Easter Road I didn’t think he was Celtic’s worst player.
“I thought he did ok and against St Mirren, I thought he had a decent game.
“There’s a player in every team that becomes a scapegoat and I think Bernabei is one of those players.
“But I think his last few performances have been pretty decent.”
Barry Ferguson is completely wrong about the Celtic fans
Barry Ferguson’s assertion that Bernabei is somehow a scapegoat could not be further from the truth. As I said previously, the Argentinian has done absolutely nothing of note since joining for almost £4m two summers ago.
19 appearances in his first season under Postecoglou and only eight so far under Rodgers prove that he has work to do to oust Greg Taylor from the left-back position. []
Discipline issues at the start of the season meant that Bernabei’s relationship with Rodgers got off to a bad start and he never really recovered from that.

Bernabei also had off-field issues to deal with at the beginning of his Celtic career where he, again, never endeared himself to Ange Postecoglou.
So if Ferguson really looks at it, criticism of Bernabei was happening long before he was ever in the Celtic team so his assertion that he is somehow a ‘scapegoat’ for the Celtic fans now looks ludicrous.
All Bernabei needs to really do is his talking on the pitch. If that continues then the fans will continue to get behind him.
