Saudi Arabia now on a mission to beat West Ham to ‘special’ £26m player

Saudi Arabia are reportedly keen on signing Ajax attacker Steven Bergwijn, with West Ham also linked with a move for the Dutch international.

The Middle Eastern state have been on a one-man mission in recent months to attract the biggest and brightest names in football to the Saudi Pro League, with the January market no exception.

Whilst there is talk that some star players might be keen on returning to Europe, that hasn’t dismayed some Saudi Arabian clubs from targeting some impressive signings, including Bergwijn.

Voetbal Primeur report that SPL teams are interested in signing Bergwijn, with West Ham also heavily interested in signing the former Tottenham star this January.

, Bergwijn returning to the Premier League would be quite the switch given the attacker’s previous links to Tottenham.

Indeed, West Ham are in the market for a wide attacker this January, and missing out on a quality target like Bergwijn to Saudi Arabia would come across to many as a massive blow for the Irons.

Since joining Ajax for a reported £26m, Bergwijn’s career has somewhat stalled despite how ideal the move seemed at the time.

And for West Ham, the Irons could be the club that can reignite the Dutch international’s form, with David Moyes proving to be a master of such a craft.

However, with Saudi Arabian clubs now involved, West Ham’s odds of actually signing Bergwijn seem lower than they have ever been this January.

And for the Hammers, they must do all they can to ensure Bergwijn doesn’t make the move to the Middle East, with the winger good enough to once again star in the Premier League.
