Samuel Umtiti could help Liverpool fill Gomez and Van Dijk gap – TBR View

Liverpool’s injury problems are well-known at the moment, with the likes of Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez both missing for extended periods.

The Reds’ title defence is turning into something of a nightmare in terms of bad luck. But despite that injury luck, Jurgen Klopp’s men remain right in the mix and are well place to make a good fist of things.

However, the defence will need strengthening. Conlflicting reports seem to suggest that Klopp is happy with his current lot while others claim the Reds will indeed make a January move to add to the defensive ranks.

And if they do decide to make a move, then Barcelona defender Samuel Umtiti could be the man they need.

claims Umtiti is one of four Barcelona players who Ronald Koeman is looking to offload. And that could play into the hands of Liverpool, who are desperate for a new central defender.

Cover and quality

Obviously, the big worry for Liverpool when it comes to Umtiti is his injury record. His time in Spain has been blighted by injury and he’s failed to really kick on as many hoped he would.

However, this is also a World Cup winning defender who, at 26, still has time on his side to put those injury woes behind him and make a real fist of things away from the Nou Camp.

claimed that Umtiti could be allowed to leave for as little as £20m. In thed current market, for a player of his quality, it could be a no-brainer for Liverpool.

Time will tell, of course. Jurgen Klopp will have a sound plan of what he wants to do. But if he does decide he needs a new defender, then the addition of a French World Cup winner wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world!
