Sammy Lee says he’s gutted after hearing ‘heartbreaking’ news coming from Liverpool

Liverpool have had to say a few tough goodbyes over the years.

Robbie Fowler didn’t like how Luis Suarez left Liverpool, saying goodbye to Roberto Firmino a few years ago wasn’t easy, while losing Philippe Coutinho at the peak of his powers wasn’t easy.

Liverpool may be about to lose another huge star too.

Indeed, while Virgil van Dijk is set to sign a new deal at Liverpool, Trent Alexander-Arnold is set to join Real Madrid.

Speaking on the No Tippy Tappy Football Podcast, Liverpool legend, Sammy Lee, has been discussing Alexander-Arnold’s impending move to Madrid, and he says that he’s very sad to see the defender making this move.

Sammy Lee sad to see Trent Alexander-Arnold leaving Liverpool

Lee spoke about Alexander-Arnold and his potential move to Real Madrid.

The pundit says he’s very sad to see Alexander-Arnold go, but he can somewhat understand why he’d want to join Real Madrid.

“You mentioned Trent before. What is your thoughts on that Trent situation?” Lee was asked.

Very sad. Very sad as a Liverpool fan. Very sad because he’s done fantastic for Liverpool Football Club.

“We spoke about it before and when he’s been there since 6pm, it’s heartbreaking to see him leave the club. I can understand it. Especially if it’s Real Madrid.

“Real Madrid, exactly. I can understand it. But it’s still disappointing because we love ours to stay with.

“And also, he’s at a Liverpool team, which have got chances of going on to win other things. You know, so I understand in the past where players left, the teams weren’t expected to win trophies, although every team is expected to win trophies at Liverpool. So it’s harsh, you know, but I understand it.”

Players who left their boyhood clubs for Real Madrid

Unfortunately for Liverpool, when Real Madrid come calling, it’s almost impossible to say no.

Los Blancos are 15-time European champions for a reason, they’re the biggest club in the world and, more often than not, they get what they want.

Alexander-Arnold isn’t the first player to leave his boyhood club for Madrid, and he probably won’t bethe last.

Ultimately, most of these players didn’t live to regret their decisions either, Karim Benzema became a Ballon d’Or winner at Real Madrid, while Steve McManaman won two Champions League trophies.

Michael Owen didn’t have the best of times in Madrid, but he’s the exception to the rule in this case.

It is sad to see Alexander-Arnold leaving Liverpool in this way, but, as Sammy Lee says, it’s hard to blame him too much.
