How Sami Hyppia inadvertently helped shape Domagoj Vida’s career

Croatia are into the World Cup final and one of their key men in this run has been Domagoj Vida. The talented central defender has formed a brilliant partnership at the back with Liverpool’s Dejan Lovren and it seems the Reds are keen to unite the pair at club level.

Liverpool are one of a number of clubs linked with signing Vida this summer.

that Liverpool have made a second bid worth €20 million (£17.6 million) for the player. Besiktas, however, are waiting for a bid in the region of €35 million (£30.1 million) for a player they only signed from Dynamo Kiev in January.

For Vida, it would be a second chance at making it in a top European league. His last attempt was in Germany and it did not go well.

He was just 21 when he moved to Bayer Leverkusen from Osijek in 2010. Under Jupp Heynckes he played just one game in the German league, making eight in the Europa League.

“Domagoj Vida is a highly talented player and we have a great deal of promise for him, as he has a great footballing future.”

One of the reasons why he struggled that season was the presence of a Liverpool legend. Sami Hyppia played at the heart of Leverkusen’s defence that season along with Manuel Friedrich and Michal Kadlec.

After one season Vida left, returning to Croatia with Dinamo Zagreb. He went on to improve his game exponentially and earn a move to Kiev. Eight years on he is looking ready to make it in a top league.

Liverpool will face a fight to sign the player this summer but having him share defensive duties with Lovren and Virgil van Dijk will give Liverpool amazing defensive depth.
