Sam Allardyce says he really didn’t rate £35m player at Leeds

The less said about Sam Allardyce’s time at Leeds United the better.

Big Sam came in at the end of the 2022/23 season with just four games to go with the daunting task of trying to save Leeds from relegation.

Ultimately, it was too late for Allardyce to make any sort of difference at Elland Road, but, in true Allardyce fashion, he made some big calls during that time.

Allardyce didn’t use Georginio Rutter at all during his time as Leeds gaffer – bear in mind this is just weeks after Rutter joined Leeds for .

As you can imagine, Leeds fans had no idea why Rutter wasn’t playing, and now, speaking on the Under the Cosh Podcast, Allardyce has shared why he shunned the Frenchman.

Why Sam Allardyce didn’t use Georginio Rutter

Simply put, Allardyce didn’t think Rutter was good enough when he was at Leeds.

“I’d love to ask about Rutter, why you didn’t play Rutter?” Allardyce was aked.

“He wasn’t good enough,” Allardyce said.

“That’s answered that, but he’s just gone to Brighton for £40m,” The host replied.

“I just couldn’t believe they paid that much money for him. Under those circumstances he was too young. Coming in and playing in a struggling side in the Premier League that young was a lot to ask,” Allardyce concluded.

Georginio Rutter had a poor start at Leeds

Georginio Rutter was, of course, one of Leeds’ better players last season and he’s earned a big-money move to Brighton.

However, we mustn’t forget just how bad Rutter was when he first came in at Leeds.

He failed to score a single goal that season after arriving from Hoffenheim, and he looked completely out of his depth.

The reality is, with four games to save yourself, you can’t waste time on a player who is trying to adjust.

Allardyce may have misjudged Rutter’s overall ability at that time, but you can’t blame him too much for leaving him out for those four matches.
